Archery has experienced an amazing transformation. From its initial use in hunting and warfare, this use of bow and arrow has grown to become an Olympic sport that displays the visual and precision skills of its competitors. As with most sports, however, a need for protective archery equipment has become necessary. There is a risk of injury to the arms, chest, and hands when using archery equipment.

One piece of archery equipment that serves as protective gear is the bracer, also called an arm guard. As the name implies, this plastic or leather piece protects the forearm from the string of the bow or the arrow's fletching. Considering the vital blood vessels and general importance of the arm, it's easy to realize why the bracer is a wise investment. Bracers aren't very expensive either. Ranging from $6 to $20, they're actually very economical pieces of archery equipment.

Equally as important as protecting the arms is protecting the hands. Lack of hand protection often results in  callouses and cracks. Luckily, there's a piece of archery equipment that solves this problem. Archery gloves protect hands from strain while pulling back the bow. It's to an archer's advantage to wear archery gloves, so that he or she can focus on the goal at hand: hitting the target. This doesn't even mention the fact that archery gloves are highly durable and pleasantly comfortable to wear. Like arm guards, archery gloves are serve as archery equipment that protects archers and makes archery more enjoyable in general.

A piece of archery equipment that offers more intricate protection is the thumb ring. Normally, this piece of archery equipment is used with curved bows popular in Asian archery techniques. The thumb ring protects the thumb from the strain of the bow string. Easily visualized is the importance of the thumb ring in protecting this portion of the hand. Made of sturdy materials such as ivory, plastic, metal, glass and stone, a thumb ring is definitely an effective piece of archery equipment.

When using a compound bow, there's another piece of archery equipment available that protects an important area. Release aids help archers to shoot more effectively while keeping their hands secure. With a release aid an archer can also decrease the energy needed to shoot his or her bow yet not compromise the bow's speed and power. For compound bows, having a release aid is definitely not only an effective safety precaution, it also enhances an archer's shooting.

A final piece of archery equipment used as protective gear is the finger tab. The finger tab is normally made of leather and it protects the finger from the bow string. Strapped to an archer's hand, the finger tab tends to be more comfortable to wear than archery gloves. Essentially, the finger tab serves as a lighter alternative to the glove yet still protects the important areas of the hand.

With the wide range of archery equipment designed as protective gear, it's easy to have a fun time shooting at a range. The strains and pains that are possible with using the bow and arrow are easily avoidable with the right archery equipment, which makes for a very enjoyable sport.
